Theme: Church’s Role and Response to Conflict Resolution

Concept Note:

The Church, as a transformative agent, has for centuries contributed to conflict resolution and reconciliation. Rooted in teachings of love, forgiveness, and justice, the Church serves as a catalytic force, bridging divides between individuals, communities, and nations. Its ability to transcend political and cultural barriers often positions it as a neutral and trusted mediator, empowering it to facilitate meaningful dialogue and foster lasting peace.

Well researched historical articles on this topic – “Church’s Role and Response to Conflict Resolution” – with a special reference to India is significant in India today, where conflicts – religious, ideological, political, economic, social or ethnic – are on the increase and pervasive. The Church’s role extends beyond mere spiritual guidance. It includes advocacy for social justice, education on nonviolence, and community healing initiatives. By addressing the root causes of conflict, such as inequality and systemic oppression, the Church creates an environment conducive to reconciliation. Additionally, its grassroots presence allows it to connect with marginalized groups, tackling issues of inequality, injustice, and discrimination. Furthermore, the Church’s presence and teachings often transcend cultural and national boundaries, allowing it to unite diverse groups under common principles of peace and justice.

This concept paper invites articles examining case studies of successful Church-led interventions in India, analyze the principles guiding its actions, and address challenges like maintaining impartiality. The research articles would highlight the Church’s unique ability to inspire transformative change by promoting forgiveness, unity, and hope in deeply divided societies, reinforcing its relevance as a peacemaker in the modern era. The research articles could highlight the ongoing internal/external conflict resolution/peace promotion as part of response of the Church like – “The India Peace Centre”, Nagpur, “The Peace Coalition”, Delhi, The Board of Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration of the NCCI.

Moreover, the Church has historically been a cornerstone of moral and ethical leadership, serving as a vital mediator in conflicts across communities leading to bridging divides in a fragmented world. By promoting values such as love, forgiveness, and reconciliation, the Church can address not only interpersonal conflicts but also systemic issues that perpetuate division. Its moral authority often positions it as a trusted entity, capable of facilitating dialogue between opposing parties, fostering understanding, and paving the way for peaceful resolutions. Exploring the Church’s role as a catalyst in conflict resolution and reconciliation provides insights into its potential as a model for other institutions in fostering unity and resolving conflicts in an increasingly divided world.
